Painting: Boating
Artist: Edouard Manet
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 38.25x51.25"
Year: 1874
This important boat scene dates to the sunmmer of 1874, when Manet, Monet, and Renoir spent time together in and near Argenteuil. Although some critics disapproved of the artist's use of a flat blue background and dramatic cropping (both inspired by the Japanese prints so popular at the time), the painting was widely admired by Manet's peers, several of whom emulated it. The male model for this painting is believed to have been the artist's brother in-law, Rodolphe Leenhoff.
